The resistance of the conscious mind to the unconscious and the depreciation of the latter were historical necessities in the development of the human psyche, for otherwise the conscious mind would never have been able to differentiate itself at all. But modern man's consciousness has
strayed rather too far from the fact of the unconscious . . . Consequently the approach of the unconscious induces a panic fear in civilized people, not least on account of the menacing analogy with insanity. (Jung, 1953, p 12, para. 60)

"Suffer me to observe that whoever studies the
eclipses of former Ages and compares them with the great events in the history of the times and years
in which they happened shall find that the fall of the Assyrian, Persian, Grecian and Roman monarchies
each of the was remarkably preceded by great and total eclipses of the heavenly bodies. Observations
of this kind, joined with the ancient and long-tried rules of our art....make me tremble for the Empire
now in being." ~ B.Franklin, Poor Richards Almanac 1736
Through observation of the patterns and cycles in the astrological chart, astrological readings can help one understand the ebb and flow of life’s cycles; of personal, relationship and family dynamics.
Astrological readings also facilitate a deeper understanding of personal motivations, help us to recognize and work with self-destructive patterns, initiate growth and understanding of the self and gain insight into the archetypal footprint of the soul. ~ ollin |

BRIEF HISTORY OF HUMANISTIC ASTROLOGY
Excerpted from The Alchemist Within, J. Ollin (2007) Fast-forwarding to the turn of the 20th century, the astrology of the alchemists and Ptolemy was reconstructed through the vision of Marc Edmund Jones and Dane Rudyar. By 1935 they had reinterpreted Ptolemy's work to address modern mans need to find meaning in what was becoming a meaningless world. Natal or horary astrology gradually became reinterpreted as humanistic astrology following the precepts of the symbolic language that offered a greater understanding of the relationship between the self and "organic wholes". It became an instrument of self-transformation, a means of self-actualization. In its new form, humanistic astrology remained a symbolic language that facilitated and informed conscious understanding and translation of the cycles of unfolding that corresponded to the psychological process of transformation. Humanistic astrology continues along this path, one of individuation and appreciation for the cyclic inter-relationships of all life as part of an existential whole - it is a language based on holistic perception of evolutionary patterns of growth, specifically archetypal patterns.
Symbolically, the birth chart is a representation of one's archetypal form, a mandala of individual self hood. In Psychology and Alchemy Jung describes as a mandala, specifically "a clock", with a dark centre, and leftward circumambulatio with "houses" and
planetary phases."(1)
Humanistic/psychological astrology - according to Jungian analyst and astrologer, Karen Hamaker-Zondag - sees the person as an independent whole,
as well as a part of the greater universal whole. The birth chart, therefore, is not something to be overcome, anymore than one can overcome their complexes. It is not "good" or "bad," but corresponds to a cyclic process of becoming, one that follows a seed like pattern describing individual selfhood. Like philosophical alchemy, it became understood as an attempt to manifest ones archetypal nature - transform the primitive functions through spiritual, ritualistic motions. To integrate within the individual the opposites which Christianity had failed to resolve.
